2019.10.18 Exhibition “Observe, Understand, and Emulate Living Creatures”

This exhibition, organized by the Institute of Global Prominent Research at Chiba University, introduces our research.
Professor Hao Liu, has been researching the flight of birds and insects for more than 20 years. Recently, this research have gotten attention in Japanese society which goes beyound the field of bioinspired engineering.
In 2018, Professor Liu launched a research project in collaboration with biologists, chemists, and cognitive scientists to apply the shape, softness, and intelligence of living creatures to drone technology and other applications.
The project's particular focus is on the dynamics of biological flight. For example, when an insect or bird flaps its wings, it creates a vortex on the leading edge of its wings. This “anterior vortex” makes insects and birds to produce a lift force greater than their own weight. In this exhibition, visitors can experience how the “anterior vortex” is related to the flight of living creatures through stereoscopic images. We will also introduce various other engineering techniques that emulate the function and structure of birds' wings based on the latest findings.
